How can we help?
Psychology Melbourne can offer people suffering post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) a highly successful psychological treatment called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to help reduce the distress of traumatic memories.
It can be an alternative treatment to some psychiatric medications and does not include extended exposure to the distressing memories or detailed descriptions of the trauma.
We have a large team of male and female relationship psychologists who provide in-person and online EMDR counselling. They are available six days a week, for sessions both before and after working hours, as well as all day on Saturdays.
What does it include?
EMDR therapy is a highly effective therapy technique based on an adaptive information processing model using bilateral stimulation - usually visually by moving one’s eyes in a specific way - to create new neural connections in the brain.
Before your first session, you will receive specific psychological tests that help guide your psychologist in developing a treatment plan for you.
The results of these tests will be discussed with you during your session. Depending on your results, further testing may be required.
After reviewing your tests results, your psychologist may recommend:
- further testing if the results are not clear enough;
- a series of one-on-one counselling sessions
For more information about any of the above, please contact our Reception team on 1300 161 639 or email us at info@psychologymelbourne.com.au or use the chat box on this website.
How does EMDR work?
EMDR therapy follows an eight-phase process to help clients process traumatic memories and reduce associated distress:
- History Taking and Treatment Planning: The psychologist gathers the client’s history and identifies traumatic memories to target.
- Preparation: The psychologist explains the EMDR process and establishes a safe environment, helping the client develop coping strategies to manage any distress that may arise.
- Assessment: The psychologist identifies specific negative beliefs associated with the traumatic memory and sets a positive belief that the client wants to adopt.
- Desensitisation: The client focuses on the traumatic memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation (e.g., eye movements), which helps to reduce the emotional intensity of the memory.
- Installation: The psychologist helps the client reinforce the positive beliefs identified earlier, integrating them into the memory.
- Body Scan: The client checks for any lingering physical tension or discomfort, and if so, additional bilateral stimulation may be used by the psychologist to address it.
- Closure: Each session concludes with a return to a state of equilibrium, and the therapist ensures the client feels grounded and safe.
- Re-evaluation: In future sessions, the psychologist reviews the progress made and addresses any new issues or memories that may have emerged.
This structured approach helps clients transform how they relate to traumatic memories, fostering healing and a healthier, more adaptive outlook.
