The key to successful therapy
The match between you and your therapist is the most critical factor for successful counselling: more important than the professional technique used or whether the psychologist is a clinical, counselling or any other type of psychologist.
What we look for in our psychologists - and what you should look for too - is empathy; the ability and willingness to engage and affirm; flexibility and experience and the commitment to identify and deal constructively with any difficulties.
Psychology Melbourne’s Personal Matching Service is based on a comprehensive, independent research study on the impact of matching on client outcomes. The study showed that matched clients had stronger therapeutic relationships and significantly better outcomes than unmatched clients. Our Director, Jill Wright, delivered the resulting research paper, “Building the Therapeutic Relationship in Private Practice” at the Australian Psychological Society’s 2014 Annual Conference in Hobart.

What is a personal matching session?
At Psychology Melbourne, we offer an initial Personal Matching session to assess your personal needs and issues, and match you with the psychologist most likely to engage with you in a successful therapeutic relationship.
Your Matching psychologist will take into account many factors, including special areas of expertise required, your counselling history, as well as your particular personality and that of the psychologist, increasing the chance that you will ‘click’.
Personal Matching includes screening tests and a 30-minute session – between 50-minute and 1 hour for couples - with a psychologist, which is eligible for a Medicare rebate or private health.
During your initial discussion, your matching psychologist will:
- Explore why you are seeking counselling, your background and history
- Explain how counselling works and answer your questions
- Identify which of our psychologists you will work best with
- Help you set realistic and achievable goals
- Provide your matched psychologist with a full background report
- Follow up if there are any problems with the match
Why is it important?
Psychology Melbourne has made significant investments in training psychologists to understand, respect and enhance the therapeutic relationship. Many practices leave this largely to chance, simply assigning "the next cab off the rank".
Psychology Melbourne takes a different approach. We know that a mismatch between psychologist and client can lead to a client having to begin the process all over again at significant expense, and can even sabotage the chances of successful therapy.
Our matches have a very high success rate (95%) but occasionally there will be a mismatch. In such cases you will be offered a free rematch to another psychologist.
